Before + After School

Classroom Matters offers afterschool care for K-6th graders through CMASP (Classroom Matters Afterschool Program). We also have a Language & Enrichment Program that teaches students Spanish or Mandarin, or learn how engaging and entertaining math can be at Math Club.

Our afterschool care program is held at St. Alban’s Church at the corner of Washington and Curtis in Albany. The space is a large, beautiful open hall with a kitchen and a small stage. The kids also spend quite a bit of time at Memorial Park, which is where you can find them on Wednesdays – after they’ve done their homework and reading, of course!

The student-to-teacher ratio is approximately 9:1. We work with students of all abilities, including kids with learning differences.

Our program includes:

  • Homework supervision/help and daily reading time
  • Free play with a wide choice of enrichment activities, such as strategy games, building with Legos, origami, crafting, dodgeball, relay races, dance parties, and more
  • Cooking, art, STEM activities, and lots of outdoor play
  • Local field trips, special guest visits, cultural celebrations, and community activities
  • Fresh fruits and veggies every day

The program does not have a religious component. However, we occasionally partner with the rector of St. Alban’s, Reverend Julie Wakelee-Lynch, to participate in community-involvement activities that focus on increasing the kids’ awareness of the world around them and how they can positively contribute.

Students from all local schools are welcome, though we provide afterschool pick-up from Thousand Oaks, Cornell, Marin, and Harding Elementary School free of charge.  If your child attends another school, you may drop them off beginning at 1:30pm each day, OR Classroom Matters can recommend a CM staff member who can contract separately with you to walk/drive your child to program (this service is unaffiliated with CM, as you'd pay them directly).

Siblings discounts available.  6th graders are welcome for Junior Counselor roles.

Language enrichment | Spanish
grades K to 5th

The CM Language Enrichment Program - Spanish, is a learning journey for kids and customized to fit the needs of the students and parents. It's an opportunity to engage kids in learning about the Spanish language, including the cultures of the countries where Spanish is spoken. Using best practices from a variety of second-language teaching strategies, we provide a foundation of basic Spanish phrases and vocabulary. Through movement, Total Physical Response, song, music, art, and reading and listening activities, our students learn to speak, read, write, and love the Spanish language. The biggest goal of our program is to expose our students to the language in an engaging, play- and project-based environment. Our teachers are native or near-native speakers, or have minors or majors in Spanish – and they are all passionate about the language. They all have previous teaching experience and receive ongoing training in classroom management and effective teaching strategies.

Depending on the location, Spanish is taught before or after school. Please inquire to find out if the program you are interested in is running before or after school hours.

No previous knowledge of the Spanish language is necessary. Curiosity and a willingness to learn are!
