College Essays Workshops

Spearheaded by veteran tutor Rosalind Diaz, these workshops will help students develop and conquer one of the crucial parts of their college applications. Rosalind recently completed a Ph.D. in English at UC Berkeley, where she received two competitive awards for excellence and innovation in teaching. She also holds a B.A. in English from Yale University.

Intro to College essays

This workshop provides high school juniors with the knowledge and skills they need to begin writing essays for college applications. Students will preview the questions from the Common Application as well as the Personal Insight Questions for colleges in the UC system. They will explore characteristics of strong and successful essays, and will build a personalized toolkit for brainstorming, self-reflecting, and prewriting. These crucial skills will help set students up for success when they begin the essay-writing process.

Writing your college essays

In this comprehensive workshop, students can expect to take one essay (e.g., the Common App or one of the UC Personal Insight Questions) through all the stages of writing — from brainstorming to final revisions, and make a personalized plan for completing remaining essays.

Each session, students will have short writing exercises, group discussions, and writing instructions. Topics will cover:

  • Intro to Writing

  • From Brainstorming to Drafting

  • Asking For and Using Feedback

  • How to Revise

  • Checklist/Rewrites

Total instruction time is 15 hours. Classes in Session A will include a 30-minute meal break so please have your student pack a lunch. Session B does not include a meal break.
