The High School Hub is an extraordinary
noncommercial portal to excellent free online academic resources for
high school students. It features learning activities, an ongoing teen
poetry contest, a reference collection, college information, and subject
guides for English, mathematics, science, social studies, world languages,
arts, health, and technology.
KidsHub is a lot like The
High School Hub, only it's for middle school students. It has educational
games, quizzes, and links, organized by subject area.
Recording
for the Blind & Dyslexic, a nonprofit volunteer organization, is
the nation's educational library serving people who cannot effectively
read standard print because of visual impairment, dyslexia, or other
physical disability. There is a membership fee, but once a family joins,
they have access to an enormous library of books on tape and CD ROM,
a much larger selection than is available anywhere else.
Lightspan. You and your family
can visit this web site to find resources for studying. You do need
to know your district code as part of the log in, kind of a hassle,
but once you get into the site, it's worth your while. One great feature
these guys have is the Study Buddy, where you can easily access information
from The CIA World Fact Book, measurement converters, distance calculators,
currency converters, the yellow pages and more.
Literary Guides. There are many sites (and
many of them are bad) that claim to help you understand and grapple
with great works of literature. We are working to review as many of
them as we can. This page contains descriptions of recommended sites
as we find them.
Math and Science Sites. These math sites
can help you with your homework, give you practice drills and more. This
page describes and explains each site so you can find the right one
for your particular needs.
Searching the Web. A lot of you have been asking
for tips on how to do good research using the World Wide Web. Here's
the lowdown on search engines, directories, and how you can find the
pages you want.
College
Preparation
Standardized Test Information. The essential
sites you need to find out about the SATs, AP exams, and other standardized
tests.
Common Application for Colleges.
The Common Application is the recommended form of 227 selective colleges
and universities for admission to their undergraduate programs. Many
of these institutions use the form exclusively. All give equal consideration
to the Common Application and the college's own form.
Local
Resources
Berkeley High School.
Get into the Berkeley High web site. Up-to-date information on requirements,
teacher e-mail addresses, and more.
Local Bookstores. The East Bay is a great
place to find smart, independent booksellers who can really help you
out. Here's a list of some great bookstores you should check out.
