CLASSROOM MATTERS

Local Bookstores

Here are some of the great independent booksellers in the East Bay: go meet them!

Black Oak Books. Great bookstore in North Berkeley; quite famous for their readings. Black Oak has a great selection of used and rare books as well as brand spanking new ones. Be sure to check out their huge back room where all the history and philosophy is, in addition to the half-price paperbacks!

Cody's. Cody's is the definitive seller of new books in the East Bay. They have two huge stores: one on Telegraph Avenue near the UC Berkeley campus, and one on 4th Street in West Berkeley. They are very helpful, have a great information desk, and host some really famous people for readings.

Diesel, A Bookstore. A personal favorite. John and Alison sell new and used books, and they are some of the smartest and most knowledgeable booksellers we've ever met. They also have really incredible taste. The store is on College Avenue in Rockridge. Diesel offers readings, book groups, writing workshops, and comfy chairs by the fireplace for rainy days.

Moe's. Moe's is the definitive seller of used books in the East Bay. They have one really incredibly huge store (4 floors) on Telegraph Avenue near the UC Berkeley campus. They sell new books, too, but it's their secondhand inventory that really makes them stand out. Literature, history, travel, cooking, art books, zoology, film, theater, exploration, architecture...if you need it, they probably have it. And if you want to sell a book, they may even buy it!

Pegasus/Pendragon. Three great bookstores! One on Shattuck in downtown Berkeley, one on Solano, and one on College Avenue in Rockridge. They sell both new and used books, and while they specialize in literature, children's books, cookbooks, metaphysics and psychology, they carry a fine array of books in nearly every other category as well.
